Welcome to the Hearing Outcome and Neuroscience (HON) Laboratory website! The HON LAB is part of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Montclair State University in New Jersey. Our doctoral students in the lab are dedicated future audiologists with a strong interest in research, particularly in hearing science and auditory neuroscience. In the HON LAB, driven by clinical concerns in audiology, we combine techniques like high-density electroencephalography, behavioral testing, and computational analyses to explore numerous understudied areas that connect human electrophysiology with various outcomes important to current audiology. In particular, we investigate how signal processing—such as noise reduction algorithms—affects the cortical representation of individual hearing outcomes in the presence of background noise. We also study the individual characteristics, like noise tolerance, that contribute to differences in hearing outcomes. Further, we explore questions about bilingualism and develop novel ways of aural rehabilitation. Our work is supported by generous funding from the Hearing Health Foundation.
We are actively recruiting participants for our ongoing studies. If you'd like to participate, please email us at honlab@montclair.edu for more information.
